This book is soft cover and measures 8 ½ inches by 11 inches. It has 573 pages. The author is a battalion chief with the Metro Dade County (FL) Fire Rescue and is a licensed fire instructor, paramedic and firefighter. He is Fire/EMS liaison to the William Lehman Injury research Center at the Ryder Trauma Center in Miami and serves as an instructor in Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s Officer Development.
The author is so indebted to the extrication professionals (51) who assisted with staging procedures throughout the text, that he not only listed their names, he provide their pictures!
The book is subtitled, “a practical guide” and I have to agree it is every bit of one. The author doers an excellent job of covering all bases so to speak. He knows that emergencies in the field can vary greatly from the classroom and training ground and so stresses the gaining of knowledge and skill, doing a good size up, noting the presence of hazards and making tough decisions, all of which is laid out in the first chapter.
The book has a page of Acronyms used in the book and ironically one is used (not listed) in the first paragraph of Chapter 1. I believe it may be related to his department and it is only used in the book once so I guess it is not that important.
The book is loaded, and I mean loaded with photos! The publisher claims there are over 1,000 of them and I believe it. To give an example, in the first chapter mention is made of the use of wreckers and there are 18 photos of a heavy duty wrecker illustrating for the most part, the different components these trucks have for towing. Now doesn’t this sound like a book we need? It’s a book that illustrates everything that is important in helping the reader carry out extrication.
There are 11 chapters: Getting Organized, Tools, Equipment and Apparatus, Stabilization (with 17 procedures), Door and Side Procedures (24 of them), Roof Procedures (19), Interior Procedures (25), Crash Related Impalement (8 procedures), Entrapment Beneath and Between Vehicles (12 procedures), Trucks and Tractor Trailers (27 procedures), Extrication Procedures for School and Transit Buses (26) and Sport and Race Vehicles. This last chapter has an appendix with 60 photos on things to think about. They are not part of a procedure as procedures are a group of photos explaining an operation in steps. These photos address tips and different parts of the vehicles which are of concern. There is a small but of information about hybrids as well in this book. Procedures in many cases cover the same type evolution with different type tools. The procedure is what makes up for most of the photos and along with text, make this book so versatile.
